The Romance of Africa is the fifth quilt in what has turned into my “About Africa” series. First I made The Joys of Africa. I liked it so much I made The Beauty of Africa, The Drum Beat of Africa, The Adventures of Africa and now The Romance of Africa. I have so much African fabric, I may never stop!
Like the other quilts in the series, The Romance of Africa is a quilted wallhanging composed of a wide variety of African fabrics. It gets its name from the red hearts in the center block. It measures 35.5 x 35.5 inches.
I pieced it on my Janome sewing machine, but unlike the other quilts in the series, The Romance of Africa is quilted by hand. I added big stitch quilting in yellow in different patterns as a design element. The blocks have quilted circles and the borders have traditional quilt patterns.
The back of the quilt features a yellow sunflower fabric. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt. After the quilt was bound and labeled, I embellished it with buttons and a love charm.
Because of the dark fabric, I added a printed signature label on the front instead of my hand written signature. This quilt is one-of-a-kind.
