Follow me to Freedom started with 6 inch Underground Railroad blocks in red and white. I wanted an Underground Railroad quilt made with smaller blocks.
I decided to place the blocks in a landscape setting so I pieced a red background and added house blocks and tree blocks. Because I love words in my quilts, I appliqued the words “Follow Me to Freedom” and “Harriet Tubman”. I embellished the houses and trees with buttons, yo-yo’s and silk flowers. My friend Maxine Moore quilted the quilt on her long arm.
There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt. I signed it on the front.
This quilt is one-of-a-kind and ready for Juneteenth exhibits.
But before the Juneteenth exhibits, Follow Me to Freedom is making her public debut in my solo exhibit Long Time Coming: A Retrospective Exhibit of Red and white Quilts. The exhibit opened November 19, 2022 and runs through January 13, 2023 at the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum and Conference Center, 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta, GA. I hope you have a chance to see the exhibit.
