After taking a class taught by Aleathia Chisolm at the 2022 Atlanta Quilt Festival to learn the Siddi Kawandi technique and finishing my class sample, I made one in red and white. After all, I have mountains of red and white scraps.
The Kawandi technique requires hand stitching, and the quilt is built from the outside to the middle adding scraps as you go. I find the technique relaxing.
I named my quilt Be Kind Kawandi because I added the word “kindness” and an angel in the center.
There is hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt. This quilt is one-of-a-kind.
Be Kind Kawandi will be part of my solo exhibit Long Time Coming: A Retrospective of O.V. Brantley's Red and White Quilts which will run from November 19, 2022 through January 13, 2023. I hope you can check it out.
