My sorority Delta Sigma Theta inspired my love of red and white quilts. Founded January 13, 1913, it has been around a long time and has members around the globe. I have been a member since 1974 when I was initiated into the Lambda Theta Chapter at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville on the Charter Line.
I knew the sisterhood would support my love of red and white quilts because we love elephants and everything red and white. However, the support received from my sorors has been deeper than I could have ever imagined.
Deltas have purchased my quilts, traveled to see my quilts and inspired my quilts, but awarding me the 33rd annual Kuumba Award for creativity was something I did not see coming.
Most importantly, my sisters emboldened me to stretch beyond my comfort zone with a solo exhibit of red and white quilts entitled Long Time Coming: A Retrospective of O.V. Brantley’s Red and White Quilts”. I am grateful that Delta Sigma Theta has been the wind beneath my wings.
I am proud that daughter India chose to also become a Delta, and we are hopeful that International Superstar Baby Addison will do the same.
I have many reasons to continue to add to my red and white quilt collection, and I will! Look for a new series of red and white quilts in 2025 entitled Bodacious Beautiful and Brilliant. It’s a secret for now, but I know you can keep a secret.🤐
