Celebrating Black History Month By Playing in the Dirt

Playing in the Dirt, 39 X 47 inch hand quilted batik quilt by O.V. Brantley, 2018. For sale. $1200.

Black History Month is not complete without a word about the land. After all, it was cotton and the desire for free labor To pick it that led to slavery and later the Civil War.

Black people's conncection with the land is complicated. In recent years there is a renewed understanding of how important land ownership is. At the same time most African Americans do not want to be farmers.

Even though most of us have no desire to live on a farm, beautiful back yards and even houseplants can form a connection with the dirt. I enjoy adding beautiful plants to my screened back porch, and I am determined to have a yellow rose garden in my back yard.

Plant something today. It's exciting to watch something grow.
