A Legacy to Love

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

A Legacy to Love, 66x82 inch traditional red and white quilt by O.V. Brantley, 2015.

A Legacy to Love is a family heirloom. We are a family of Deltas. (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority). I am a charter member of the Lambda Theta chapter at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. When daughter India was initiated into the Mu chapter at the University of Pittsburgh, I knew I had to make a family heirloom to document the wonderful occasion. For a sorority Mom, having her daughter become a legacy is a HUGE deal.

A Legacy to Love heart detail

I appliquéd the hearts by hand using the needle turn method. The variety of fabric choices for the hearts represents difference while at the same time being united in sisterhood. The traditional blocks represent the timelessness of the quilt and our sorority.

Red and white hearts on the back of the quilt complete the theme of the quilt. A label on the back documents the quilt. I had not looked at the label in a long time, so I was pleasantly reminded of the sweet note I included on the label. It definitely captures my feelings then and now. (Quilters, that’s why you should always include a label on the back of your quilt).

A Legacy to Love was beautifully machine quilted by Janece Risty. I signed it with love on the front.
